between the wrinkles
a lady in the pet supply store with her [elderly looking] cocker spaniel was picking up a few books on breeds. i thought nothing of it at first, i do the same (as a matter of fact at my count now i have 32 individual breed books and 8 all-breed books, as well as 3 training books and 5 breeding awareness books!) when i went to pay for the new toys i bought for my youngest Pei Shakespeare, she cut me off! she asked the [maybe 20 year old] boy at the counter if he knew anything about breeding dogs, and said she wanted to breed her cocker spaniel with another cocker spaniel her friend has because she wanted puppies. :x i was peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeved. i asked her if she wanted to breed the cocker she had with her, and she said yes! that cocker looked AT LEAST 7 or 8 years old, gray around the face and didn't look at all happy. :-? :(
imported_Cassie
We had a "reputable" breeder in my area breed his 9 year old Newfoundland dog. This gentleman was a Vet and showed his dogs as well. Of course we all thought he was crazy. His old bitch made out fine with the litter and lived a few more years after that. ShatteringGlass
customers come into my work every day and tell me how they want to breed their dog. It's sad and it frustrates me that so many people are just so ignorant. :x
imported_Kat
I agree that 6 is usually a good yardstick age to use for ceasing breeding. After that the dog is classed as a senior and mitigating unforseen health problems could result in a bitch losing her puppies or producing puppies that are compromising the bitches health as well as their own.
