dogsgalore
A friend of mine owns a male Border Collie and have mentioned wanting him to mate with the neighbors mixed breed dog. I asked why and he said they hope it might calm him down and they want one of the pups. I had a very good talk with him about overpopulation and that the most common dog at our Humane Society is a Border Collie X. I also mentioned genetics, this dog's sister has a genetic problem and has to take daily medication and I mentioned it could be passed to the pups. I'm going to have to talk with his Dad, though, to really change their mind. I'd appreciate any statistics and info on overpopulation and anything that I could show them to discourage them. Thanks! :D Oh, and can a Border Collie be a different color other than black & white? Like can they be brown and white? Just curious... :)

courtnek
one picture is worth a thousand words. Show them pictures of overcrowded shelters, kennels. explain that these dogs may never find homes, some shelters are required to put them down after a certain amount of time. explain that a lot of these dogs came from just such a mating. explain that what will calm his dog down the most is to have it neutered, not to let it breed. you can use my Christmas Poem if you like, in conjunction with the pictures. best of luck to you. pLaurent
Poor you! Common sense seems to be in short supply these days. Tell him that at the moment, there are 3,047 Border Collies and BC mixes listed on Petfinder ALONE. Tell him he might want to think about training, exercise and neutering to "calm down" his dog. dogsgalore
Thanks for that link, I'd seen it before but didn't remember what it was called, I'm definately using it. I'm getting a booklet together to give him. Courtnek, I can't seem to find your Christmas Poem, do you remember where it is? I'm also using the story about "Sam". Thank you for all your replies. Are there any more pictures I can use?
courtnek
Christmas is Coming… Christmas is coming, it's that time of year, where everyone offers each other good cheer. Where presents are opened from under the tree, Children are smiling, and people are happy... But not far away, in 'most every space, are pets gotten rid of, unwanted, displaced. Their sad little faces stare out from a crate, They don't understand why their owners are late. They don't understand why they're in here at all, they patiently wait for their people to call. The call doesn't come, as the lights are shut down, They don't understand, they just want to go home. So this year for Christmas my wishes will be that each of these creatures will get to be free. To go home with someone who'll love them at last, and give them a chance to forget their sad past. And me, as I write this, I look at my two... the scared silly Foxhound, my Lab/Pointer too. And I think of how lonely my own life would be, If for some reason they were gone from me. I give them both hugs and then call the old cat... who of course doesn't answer, gee, imagine that! I tell them I love them, and I always will. I'll feed them, and keep them, from winters cold chill. and I promise them that they will never perceive the inside of a shelter on MY Christmas Eve!! It is copyrighted, since I gave permission for the area shelters to use it, and they said I should so it wouldnt be sold without my permission. You are all welcome to use it if you want. Geez..what a lot of work for a simple poem. But I didnt want to see it popping up on Christmas Cards without my knowing about it.    Not that it would, it's not that great, but oh well...
alpha sheltie
Here's an excellent article: http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/breeding/breeder2.html And yup, Border collies come in a wide range of colors. They come in red/whites, aussie red/whites (which is more of a yellow/tan), tri-colors, blue merles, solid whites (lethal whites/double merles), and red merles. Here's a site with loads of pictures of each color: http://www.colliecorner.com

Guest Anonymous
I own a male dog which is used at stud (he is shown & has all health clearances). He did not calm down at all after being bred. Actually it has made him a much worse companion  he gets very aroused, quite often...he maturbates on blankets, furniture etc. no one in my home is safe to bend over in front of him, especially after he has just come home from being bred and is in that state of mind. He has ruined some of my pants etc. For him, it has made him much worse to live with. I wish my contract with my breeder would allow me to have him snipped as I would do it in a second, some days I think I could actually do it with my bare hands. :-? zheelah
Usually it does NOT calm a dog down if you breed him, the excact oposite, the get more active (they finally figured out what to use those things down there), they can become more dominant, escpecially with other adult male's. imported_Kat
By allowing a male to mate is not only going to elevate his desire to mate but it will also enhance his hormones and future matings will be desired to which he will go to extreme lengths for like escaping. Apart from the obvious unwanted puppies scenario, think about the increased chances of the unneutered dog getting testicular or prostate cancer alog with being in an unfit state of health with a metabolism that is too rapid to allow the dog to retain substantial carbohydrates and lipids. As a side note yes BC's certainly come in a wide variety of colours in all varieties that you can possibly imagine. Recently I saw a beautiful lemon and white flecked BC bitch. this is a link to the BC museum of colours.
