1. I added Frodo :D http://www.dogster.com/dog_page.php?i=568
2. Frodo likes to take his food out of his dish and eat kibble off the floor too. Funny because if he won't eat....I toss some onthe floor and he gobbles it up. I think he thinks it's a treat :P
3. Surprised to see this post up :P Frodo LOVES his kennel. He begs to go in at night. Just have to figure out where to put it in the house...right now it is in the hall off the kitchen. Guess giving him a treat everytime he went in helped. Now he is only in there at night (11-7) and if I leave during the day. I try to leave him out if I'm only gone for 15 minutes or so. But, he loves tissue. Monday he pulled about 50 sheets out of the box and shredded them ALL over the livingroom. Weee lol. Well at least HE had fun.
4. Frodo lost all but two of his baby teeth (those were taken out when he was neutered). I never noticed blood or extra chewing. Guess he swallowed all of them. Ewww.
5. Uh, don't worry about the switching foods part. I just fed Frodo a 25/75 mix. He only ate the California Natural and left all the Eukenuba in his tray. Hehee.
6. I got some samples of this food from my pet store. It is made by the same company as Innova. Anyone know if it is any good? It is WAY less expensive than Innova. I am still frozen with indesisiveness on which food to switch Frodo to if you can tell lol. Here are the ingredients. Anything bad?? Lamb Meal, Brown Rice, Sunflower Oil (with Vit E), Rice, di-Alpha Tocopherol (vitamin E supplement), Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Zinc Proteinate (chelated source of zinc), Iron Proteinate(chelated source of iron), Beta Carotene, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate, Copper Proteinate, Manganous Proteinate, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex, Thiamine Monoitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12, Folic Acid, Iodine supplement, Biotin -Also, this food is recomended to dogs who have problems with normal dog food. Frodo doesn't. About $7 for 5 lbs. Innova seemed to be better. All whole foods. Meat, carrots, rice, other veggies. But also $12 for 5 lbs. How do either of these compare to Diamond or Canidae? I guess I am leaning towards one of these. I know they are all good. Is one better than the rest tho? Finally a pet store by me carries good food! Also, is it going to be hard to switch him from Eukenuba. I heard it was a sweet food compared to the more natural brands. Thanks
7. I was just wondering what your local shelters are like. I just started volunteering at mine and in training they talked about other kinds of shelters. The one in our area is not a no-kill but they do keep dogs as long as possible. No dog is put down automatically (not bully breeds for example) unless the owner specifically requests it (ie because of age or illness). Each dog is in its own kennel. They have a front half and a back half which is very nice for cleaning. Dogs brought in together are kept together. Ill dogs or very scared ones are kept behind glass in a seperate room of kennels. All dogs are walked at least twice a day for 10-20 minutes but often are walked 4 time a day. Potty trained dogs are also let out for two additional potty breaks. Walking is done in nice wooded trails behind the shelter. Right now there are about 32 dogs in the general area and 10 in the special kennels. That is pretty full for this shelter. Cats and small animals are kept in a seperate area where they cannot hear barking. All animal cages are cleaned and sterilized once a day. Dog kennels are cleaned again in the evening. So, what are other kennels like? Do some kennels still house dogs in big pens together? Does that hurt when diseases come in? Thanks :)
8. If only dogs had opposable thumbs.... of course Frodo is a tad to short to vacuum. I could teach him how to scrub floors maybe
9. Frodo is a Cairn Terrier and he certainly lives up to her Terrier background. He wants to be friends with everyone whether you like it or not. He loves cats and birds and every other dog he has ever met. He won't even chase cats. He just wants to play (which they always say no to :) ). He sees me as alpha but my husband is the BIG BOSS. Frodo will roll right over when my husband comes home. He sees the kids as equals which we are working on. He only listens to their commands if I am right there too. He is a good watch dog. But, if someone ever did break in, he would just lick them to death. He only barks if someone is actually at the door which is nice. He is growing up to be a nicely rounded dog. Gentle with kids and all-round happy :)
10. Hi, I'm rather newish too. I have a Cairn Terrier named Frodo. He is about 6 months and is currently recovering from getting neutered :) I also have two parakeets. Tiki and Tavi. Frodo things they are cool toys and I have to lock him in his kennel if I have the birds out.
11. I cut Frodo's toe hair. Not sure why you can't trim your dogs....is it because of the breed? I cut it to keep it from getting matted or from building up ice balls when we go for walks. At the very least, I would trim so it is even with the foot/toe pads.
12. One thing my puppy class teacher recommended was feeding the dog in the area they keep having accidents in. They tend to not poop where they eat. I know you don't want to keep the food in the bedroom constantly but maybe you could feed him in there periodically?
13. Frodo is eating Eukenuba small breed puppy right now. I switched him once from what he was fed (puppy chow). I am debating between Wysong and Wellness still. And want to supplement with Spot's Stew. I don't think I would do BARF but Wysong has a new food that you add water to and it is reconstituted Barf (that sounds gross  ). And Wysong recommends you add supplements and rotate between their different foods. They really push for variety and recommend feeding BARF if possible. Kind of odd for a dog food company :)
14. Hey Pumpkin, nice to see another Wisconsinite dealing with these freezing temps! We haven't really done anything to "prepare." We have some food stockpiled but not enough to live on for any length of time. We have enough guns and bullets to go a mile or two over and hunt some deer and ducks out of the marsh I suppose  But, we are not planning on duct taping ourselves in. Our old house is not going to be air tight with some plastic sheetings on the windows! I really think if anything happened, my neighborhood would really get together and probably shack up in one house to conserve resources. Jessica
15. Well, now I just have to order some Wellness and have it shipped. I just want Frodo to be healthy and have a better coat. It seems dull and I know Cairns aren't a glossy coat breed but it should be a dull gleam if you know what I mean. I probably could make this stew myself but I have more money than time at this point in my life :) I don't even cook for myself  I will gradually switch his food over. He seems to poop a lot so maybe this will help too. Thanks for everyone's help! Jessica
