The Welsh Springer is a bouncy energetic dog, a hunting spaniel, who can turn his paw to many of the dogsports available these days, and makes a devoted family pet.
Welshies can be successful in Obedience, Agility, Tracking, Field Trials, and of course the hunting of game.
They love to be doing whatever their owner is doing, if you settle for a nap in an armchair they will settle down too, but if you go to a different room, they must follow, just to see what's happening!
A Welshie however loves even more to be doing something with their owner, and will throw themself into most activities with gusto, whether flying around the agility ring, or searching for rabbits on their daily walks.
Life with a Welshie is never boring.
Characteristics
Welshies don't respond well to harsh training methods, being best trained with positive methods and lots of praise, so as not to crush his spirit.
Nonetheless, they have a lot of bounce and need discipline if you don't wish to be leaped on with delight when you arrive home!
Welshies are very bright dogs, and will quickly learn the rules of the house, and pick up as many tricks as you have the patience to teach them.
Temperament
Sweet natured, adoring of the members of his family, the Welshie is a rather "softer" dog than the English Springer, and tends to be somewhat calmer.
History
The Welsh Springer descends from the same ancient stock as all the Setters and Spaniels in Britain, and has been recorded as a distinct breed since 1570.
For many years they were kept purely for the purpose of hunting birds and some small game, and were first seen in the show ring in the late 1800's.
Since then they have gained popularity slowly, although they are still a rare breed in most countries.
