Dog breeds : Majestic Tree Hound

BuckRidges Bruiser

GeneralOne of My Majestic males that is doing a nice job in the woods on coon. He is 2years old and was my first Majestic hound.

CharacteristicsMajestic Trehounds are powerful built hound. The average heigt for a female is 24.5 inches to 30 inches and for a male is 26 inches to 30 inches. The greater height is preferred provided that character and quality are also combined. Majestic Treehounds come in any color or combination of colors. Preference is toward character and qualitty instead of color.

TemperamentExtremely affectionate, neither quarrel - some with companions nor with other dogs, and is equally sensitive to kindness ro correction by his master.

HistoryThee heritage of the Majestic Tree Hound traces back to the St.Hubert Hound named after Francois Hubert, the patron Saint of hunters. He bred and Prefected the best senting hounds in Southern France during the early 8th Century. When he died, Bishops and Monks continued breeding these hounds. They were kept in monasteries throughout Nothern Italy, Southern France and Belgium. These hounds were used to track down wounded game, and sometimes to track down poachers who stole game.

A new strain was developed later in the 8th Century. This strain was known as Talbot Hounds. They were the result of crossing White St.Huberts and Talbots as the Blooded Hounds. Later, this was shortened to Bloodhounds.

In 1066 Willam the Conqueror brought St.Huberts and Talbits to England where they were used to trail deer. When deer became scarce, the English nobility began using their Bloodhounds to hunt fox. After fox hunting on horse back became popular, Bloodhound x Greyhound crosses were made to produce a harder running hound.

Both Bloodhounds and English Foxhounds were later brought to the American Colonies. Most American Fox and Coonhounds traced back to the early English Foxhounds (Bloodhound x Greyhound crosses). Over the years some exceptional strains of American Coon and Big Game Hounds have come and gone, appearing when more Bloodhound was crossed in, and disappearing when the extra Bloodhound influence was diminished through subsequent outcrossings.

The Majestic Tree Hound is a reconstitution of thhose exceptional strains. Over a long period of selecting, fieldtesting for performance, breeding and culling, hounds were developed that possessed keen scenting ability, even temperament, beautiful voices, natural treeing ability, extra houndy appearance, and good functional conformation for speed and stamina.

OriginIn 1979 Lee Newhart,Jr.decided that rather than to continue this strain as a grade hounds or single register them into existing coonhound breeds, it would be more appropriate to registerr these outstanding hounds as a seperate new breed of coon&big game hound. A committee was formed that included Lee Newhart,Sr., Robert Dutcher,Fred Newhart Robert Cooper,Jr., Randy Lovell, and Robert Newhart to implement the new breed. The National Majestic Tree Hound Association was organized in March 1980 to promote and perpetuate the Majestic Tree Hound. A Constitution, By-laws and breed standard were adopted at the first meeting. The first Majestic were formally registard with the National Kennel Club in April 1980.

UtilizationMajestic Treehounds are used for Coon and Big Game hounds. Majestic Treehounds also make wonderful pets.
