The Italian Greyhound is the smallest of the family of gazehounds (dogs that hunt by sight), although they appear
in the toy group due to their diminutive size. They have the same hunting instincts as their larger sighthound cousins, but they are bred solely to be a loving companion. Don't be deceived by the Italian Greyhounds fragile appearance - they are sturdier than they look!
Characteristics
The Italian Greyhound resembles the Greyhound in minature, just more slender in proportions. They are ideally 13" - 15" at the shoulder but can reach heights up to 17". They have a short, soft, shiny coat that sheds very little. All colors allowed except brindle and those dogs with black & tan markings. Most common are blues, fawns, reds, seals, black and pied.
Temperament
Igs are charming, gentle and loving creatures who have an innate abilty to be able to wrap their owners about their dainty little paws. They are mild mannered and intelligent. They are extrememly affectionate and devoted to their owners. They enjoy sunbathing and snuggling on the couch with their humans as wel s slepping in bed under the covers.
Very playful, wants attention all the time, love children, and love to lounge around a lot.
History
This miniature form of the Greyhound has been depicted in ancient drawings on objects of art dating as far back as 2000 years ago. Mummified remains have also been found in Egyptian tombs. They are believed to have arrived in Europe with Roman soldiers. Because of their high favor during the Renaissance they were well known in Europe and named the "Italian Greyhound". The Italian Greyhound made its appearance in America during the late 1800's.
Origin
The breed is believed to have orginated in the Mediterranean basin, possibly in the countries now known as Greece and Turkey around 500 BC
Utilization
The orginally purpose this breed as used for is shrouded in mystery. It could have likely been used as a hunting animal for small game. Today the Italian Greyhound's sole purpose is a companion animal, something he excels at.
