American Indian Dog / Native American Dog
Hakata We
General
A very rare almost extinct breed of dog used by the Native Americans for hunting everything from quail, to elk to bear. They were also taught to fish with the Indians, as well as babysit for the young and the elderly while the men hunted and the women and older childern searched for roots, berries and herbs. Before the horse was brought over by the Spainards, the dog was the sole mode of transporting all tthe families' goods and posessions across the vast wilderness of North America. Lewis & Clark traded for over 100 dogs for food from the Native Americans as they were higher in protein and fat than the mule deer and antelope. They make a wonderful compaion and family pet as well as an excellent hunter and utility work animal. The U.S. Govt. almost succeeded in making these dogs extinct when they put the Native Americans on reservations.
Characteristics
Medium to large breed with 2 coat layers. Under hair coat waterproof and windproof. Have no doggy smell to them. People with allergies or asthma to dog dander or hair can own these animals. Hypoalleregenic so to speak. Weight-80lbs. to 120lbs. Bred for utility work and hunting. Webbed feet for snow travel and swimming. Large expressive eyes, medium long to long triangular shaped head, wide between the eyes, extending down to a slender muzzle. Colors range from white to black to the very rare tortoise shell color to the very rare broken pattern or (spotted) color. Used by the Native Americans for religious ceremonies and called a "spirit dog" because of the rare coloring and markings.
Temperament
Highly intelligent, sensitive animal. Very loyal to family members very good with children. Not dog-aggressive with other breeds of dogs. Usually a stern "NO" will stop them in their tracks.

Used for hunting all game as well as great fishermen(dogs). Made almost extinct by the U.S. Govt. when they put the Native Americans on reservations.
