There is much controversy over the Hovawart breed’s origin. It is said the have been "reinvented" by crossing such breeds as the Leonbergers, German Shepherds,
Newfoundlands, Kuvasz and the African veldt dogs. Others believe that the dog survived by being isolated on small farms in rural areas.
