American Bulldog / Old Country Bulldog
Laura's Miss Kitty, owner: Lynn Hall Laura Kennels
General
The American Bulldog is descended from the original working English Bulldog brought to our shores during colonial times and later. Other breeds were added to make the American Bulldog larger, longer legged and longer muzzled than his English forbears, but essentially this dog is the truest representation of the first Bulldogs from England.
Characteristics
American Bulldogs range in size from 65 pounds to 135 pounds. They are short haired, heavy boned and muscular. They come in two breed types, Johnson and Performance. The first type is larger and heavier with a shorter muzzle and a wrinkly face. The latter type is more athletic with tighter skin and a longer muzzle. Johnson and Perfpormance ABs are often crossed to create an intermediate type, which is called the Hybrid type.
Temperament
They are generally good with kids and are fine family dogs but some American Bulldogs possess strong working drives and should not be owned by novices. This breed can be aggressive to other animals.
History
Working Bulldogs were created in the crucible of blood sport in Old England, where they battled bears, bulls and even lions. American Bulldogs are used today to catch wild boar. Because they are still used in a manner similiar to their ancestors, American bulldogs are the truest modern representation of the the original working Bulldog.
Origin
American Bulldogs originally can be traced to a large white breed of Bulldog that was introduced to the British isles shortly after the time of Christ. This now extinct breed was called the Alaunt.
Utilization
American Bulldogs are used as family guard dogs, personal protection dogs, sport protection dogs, competitive weight pull dogs and as catch dogs for wild boar. A special sport has been created just for American Bulldogs called Irondog, it combines elements of many of the above sports into a single athletic activity.
