We rescued a miniature, short hair, brown dachsund,
about a year ago. His name is Spam aka Spammy. He was approx. 5
years old, had been abused, and since his abuse, had gone through
countless owners. Why? When he gets startled, he forgets where he
is, or who he is with, and bites out of fear. Besides that, he is
sweet and loving. He loves to play, even though he can't pick up
much with his mouth, you see, someone has shaved down all of his
teeth. He is technically my teen daughter's. She loves him dearly,
as I and my son do, as well. Proof of this can be seen easily. My
10yr old som was walking Spammy. I am divorced and disabled, so
the area we live ins't good. A big boy started hitting Spam with
sticks. To protect Spam, my son picked him up, and started to run.
At this point the big boy confronted my son with a baseball bat.
He said he would just hit the dog, if he would put him down. My
son refused. The boy hit Spam in the middle of his spine. Spam jumped
from my son's arms. My son got hit several times, and got dragged
across a lawn as he held onto the bat, trying to get it from the
boy. Then he ran, got Spam, and ran home.
My son is OK. Spammy hasn't faired as well. He
was dragging his back legs, so we took him to the Vet. The Vet said
that he has a partially slipped disc, halfway down his spine. That
soon he will need surgery. Spammy is doing well on Prednisolon.
It has been over a week, and his is walking almost normally. He
can't jump, or climb steps, which he shouldn't anyway. But if he
is very active at all, the legs sag. If you pick him up, he can't
help it, he pees. The spine failure causes not only his legs not
to work, but all organs from that point, as well. Spammmy's Vet
bill came out of rent, surgery would be impossible for us to afford.
He has lived such a difficult life, for such a small, sweet dog.
It would be a shame that after only a year with a loving family,
that he be put to sleep.
