On October 1st, 1996 my husband & I moved into
our new home. After hours of cleaning and unpacking I noticed Rob
& Kelsea (my husband & then 5 yr old daughter) whispering to each
other. After asking several times what was going on I was somewhat
let in on their little secret. Rob was going somewhere but couldn't
tell me where. So, as a female sometimes does, I bugged him until
he agreed to let me go.
It wasn't until we got lost that I was told that
we were on our way to pick up a puppy for our family and our new
home. I was shocked when we found our way up a strange drive-way
only to see 2 full grown German Sheperds and 8 little ones running
around them. I had no idea this was going to happen.
We were set on getting a female, we had Missy,
a German Sheperd years ago but had to give her up to a nice family
with a farm for her to run. As luck would have it there were just
2 puppies that were not spoken for, a female and a very small male.
We picked out our puppy and was playing on the
front porch with her. After awhile I noticed that the little male
was very lovable and playful and that he was the only puppy left.
He was very small and after talking with the breeder I found out
that he was the runt.
I couldn't leave this little guy alone, he was
growing on me so fast. So after signing the papers for our little
girl I told my husband that I wanted the male to. I knew that he
probably wouldn't be taken into anyone elses home and that somehow
he belonged with us. After my husband played with him for awhile
it was settled, we had 2 new puppies for our house. You can imagine
the shock of our daughter at home. 2 new puppies!!
It has been almost 5 years now, Picard (the female)
has grown into a true lady with a very big heart and is the protector
of the family. Riker (the little guy) is now a 159 pound lap dog!
He is the biggest German Sheperd I or anyone that
knows him has ever seem, and he is also one of the most loving animals
I have ever known. My family has been blessed by these creatures.
Who ever said "Big things come in little packages"
was right.
