This is a story about my dog Chancy who I adopted
on March 3, 2001. She was 10 months old by then, and had already
had such a hard life.
The first turn of events happend when she was only
9 weeks old, and she was lost from her owners. So she had no where
to go. She then found a place that seemed nice, some land that a
farmer owned. She didn't know then that it would be the worst decision
of her life.
The farmer was a very cruel man, he beat her, chopped
off half her tail, and broke her spirit. His wife was very concerned
for this poor little dog, so she call Save Our Strays (SOS) to come
pick up the little puppy, before anything worse could happen to
it. But "SOS" was to full to pick her up at that time. The farmer
had her for 2 more weeks, until her was fed up her her, so he was
going to shoot her. His wife was so distraut by this that she call
one last time to tell "SOS" that her husband was going to kill that
night. Save our Strays decided they didn't want that to happen either
so she left immediately and traveled an 1hr away from where she
lived to go pick up the puppy. The puppy was so scared that she
hide under a tracker, where no one could get her. "SOS" spent 2
1/2 hrs trying to get her, before they finally did get her out.
Thank goodness.
When Save our Strays (SOS) got her home they decided
to name her Sassy. They had her for 8 months until they finally
thought she could go up for adoption to another family. That day
was March 3, 2001.
I just happened to be there that day and see the
most gorgeous dog. I fell in love with her the first second I saw
her. She was brown and black with gorgous markings. So I asked if
they could take her out of the cage, so I could see what she acted
like. She was so frightened that it took them 5 min. to get her
out of the cage, and when they did she wouldn't move, she splatted
on the ground w/ her legs in the air. It was so sad, it was then
that I realized I had to help her. She was so scared infact that
when I was filling out the adoption papers she deficated on herself.
It was such a sad sight. I picked her up the next day, b/c I had
to give her a bath.
When I finally got her home she was terrified of
everyone and everything. She was confortable outside but terrified
inside, it was so sad. When we would get her inside she would just
go cower in the corner with her leg up, and she would just sit that
way for hours upon hours.
I worked with her solid by giving her love and
attention for over a month. She was finally starting to respond.
It happend very gradually though. Now 10 months later, she has made
a full recovery. She is still scared of men and strangers, but she
is improving. Besides that she is wonderful dog. She is so sweet
and loving, and she actually has a very sweet and outgoing personality.
I am so glad I could help her.
If that's not good enough, I have found out that
she is a very very rare breed of dog. She is an Estrela Mountain
Dog. Its so rare in the US b/c there is only 1 breeder in the US
and only a few others in Portugal and that area. To confirm my theory
on this though I asked a few breeders about her, and they all agreed
that she was one. So I am very lucky to have this special girl.
So remember, you'll most likely never be sorry
if you get a dog from a shelter, it could turn out to be as precious
as a diamond.
